Our partner MMI (based in Dubai) just sent the first shipment to Male, the capitol of this legendary string of islands in the Indian Ocean!

Dear friends of LAURENZ V. Charming!

The mood was very good! -> photo: René Gabriel and L(aur)enz put the final touches on the new Charming 2009. René was a supporter of this project from day one. Also Fred Loimer, Peter Schweiger and Dieter Huebler plus some old friends and customers came together in Langenlois / Kamptal on Feb. 27th to examine "Charming" 2009. It is one of these rare moments of truth – did we do it again? And it makes us always very humble as no art of wine making can overrule what mother nature gives to work with. And the secret of fine Gruner is simple: give us the perfect grape, leave it alone, don’t move it around (in the cellar) - that’s it!

2009  was a great year for Gruner! … and already  the 6th vintage of this wine (by the way: currently flying in British Airways First Class) 30% less yield and perfect ripening conditions in the autumn in the vineyards gave us a very complex, concentrated AND elegant Gruner. Especially at LAURENZ V. we report a perfect "balance of power" between natural zip (the liveliness), high extracts for the "charming creaminess" and a never ending luscious finish.

So stay tuned, enjoy still the now perfect drinking "Charming" 2008 as the 2009 will be released again in September – now is the time to mature in cask, bottling in June for ideal conditions when this wine will hit the market.

5th of February - Dinner Michael Mondavi , Sophie and Lenz at Nobu in London ( Berkley street ) . Sophie joined the 2 and altogether they celebrated a very successful sales and PR blitz for Michael's new "family of wines" - consisting of 3 wines :

  • The "M" by michale Mondavi - to napa mountain cabernet - listed at harrods already.
  • Emblem - a hillside cabernet made by michale and his son rob.
  • Emblem Napa - ditto a good glass of Laurenz V. gruner "charming" and a Prinz von Hessen Riesling complemented the the delicious asian fusion cuisine of famous Nobu.

While watching discount carts and tables for today's column. I was pleased to find a wine I have been wanting to try. Gruner Veltliner is Austria's specialty. Called Gru-Vee by the cool kids, it's like an elegant Riesling with crisp acids and citrus flavors and aromas, but with an interesting peppery and herbal undertone. Laurenz Moser has a reputation for excellent wine, and this was no exception. The unique herbal quality makes it one of those wines that can hold its own with a salad.

    Tank sample. Dusty fresh citrus and gently peppered. Classic light Grüner Veltliner nose. Seems light at first but it has real persistence and a long fine finish. A very good intro to this variety in a fresh bright style. 12%, RS 3.9 g/l , TA 5.5 g/l. (JH)

    Spicy mineral aromas. Dry and lightly spiced on the palate. Clean and fresh and straightforward. Surprisingly persistent with a clean citrus finish and a touch of spice. 12.5%, RS 2.7 g/l , TA 5.5 g/l. (JH)
